Christmas treeWhen you are decorating at Christmas there are many ways to light up your home. There are many things you should consider before you begin the process of lighting up the night.

Many people like to add lights to prelit Christmas trees because they want to have additional brightness. This is not usually recommended but you can do it. It is important to remember that any lights you use on the tree should be intended for a tree. Do not use outdoor lights indoors and vice versa.

When you do use outdoor lights it is important to decorate your home with caution. Many people who live in warmer climates like to have lighted palm trees outside of their home. If you have a palm and it is near your home it can look absolutely fabulous all lit up in the night sky. However, it is important to think about taking extra precautions when it comes to low hanging power lines that you might have near your home. Keep all of your lights and Christmas decorations away from any power lines.

When you decorate for Christmas you should also be sure to check all of the lights. It is common for lights and the cords to deteriorate over the years. Many people like to save their lights and use them every year. This can cause a hazard if the cord has deteriorated. They can cause a fire on artificial Christmas trees if they are damaged too much. Always check the cables from lights you are reusing so you don’t have a fire in or around your home.

If you are someone who likes a ton of light when it comes to Christmas you might want to string many groups of lights together at the same time. This is common for people to do. Your tree will look much brighter when you use many sets of lights. However, when you do string many lights together, keep in mind you should never use more than three sets on the same string. If that is not enough light for you then use a completely different strand of lights and plug them into a separate outlet.

Another thing that can cause a hazard when you are decorating with lights is the way you run the cords. It is common to need extension cords for outdoors or in the home to get the lights to reach the desired location. It is a bad idea to run these cords under rugs where traffic is common. The traffic can cause damage to the cords which can result in a fire. You should also remember that a staple gun is very convenient and you might be tempted to hang your outdoor lights with one. However, you should never use a staple gun because you could damage the cord and find your home on fire in the night.

There are many things to think about when you decorate during the Christmas holidays. Everyone loves bright lights and some believe the brighter the better. Be sure to practice these safety tips so you have a wonderful holiday.
